KENORA OPP ARRESTED 2 PEOPLE LAST EVENING IN RELATION TO A VIOLENT ROBBERY.
A 29-year-old MERILL JULIAN LAND and 24-year-old RANDY KURAHARA appeared via telephone from Kenora OPP Station this morning in Thunder Bay Bail Court before Justice of the Peace Denette Maslach.
The court hears that LAND and KURAHARA allegedly wounded one individual male with a weapon last evening then later approached another male where they allegedly beat and robbed him of his wallet.
Crown Attorney Gordon Fillmore is opposed to both of them being released. Land had been out on bail for previous charges when this allegedly occurs. He’s also facing 2 breaches of bail charges. He has a lengthy criminal history.
Both men are directed not to have any contact with either of the 2 victims.
Both men will appear in Kenora Bail Court on Monday, March 26, 2018.
SOME CRIMINAL HISTORY OF MERRILL JULIAN LAND.
On Wednesday, December 13, 2017, as a result of an ongoing investigation, members of the Kenora detachment of the OPP arrested a male on a warrant in downtown Kenora. During the arrest, an altercation ensued and an officer was assaulted. The officer sustained minor injuries.
As a result of this investigation, 28-year-old Merrill Land of Kenora has been charged with resisting a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer.
Land had been held in custody, pending a bail hearing. Members of the OPP Kenora Community Street Crime Unit, the Kenora OPP and the OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau were involved in the arrest. He was released on bail shortly after.
Merrill Land, of Kenora, pled guilty Feb. 2, 2012, to two counts of trafficking and one failure to comply with conditions. He was sentenced to 30 days time served for the trafficking convictions and 15 days served for the breach. Eight additional charges against Land, including three trafficking-related and three possession of property obtained by crime charges, were dropped.
On January 7, 2010, Two people were arrested following a pair of stabbing incidents in the north end of Kenora.
The OPP say that around 9:00 pm that night, a fight broke out in the Minto area.
Two people sustained stab wounds and were taken to Lake of the WoodsDistrict Hospital for treatment.
One of the victims was released a short time later and the other was held for observation.
A short time later, police were able to arrest a 21-year-old Merrill Land.
A second suspect, a 17-year-old male youth was arrested later.
They have both been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
SOME CRIMINAL HISTORY OF RANDY KURAHARA.
A 21-year-old Red Lake man was arrested following a violent robbery on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, in the morning.
Provincial Police say the accused forced his way into a home on Howey Bay Road in Red Lake.
Police say once he got in, he assaulted a woman and stole alcohol from the residence.
Randy Kurahara faced one count of robbery with violence.
