Statement to the Media by Iain Angus, Candidate for the Office of Mayor of Thunder Bay
“I am announcing this morning that I will be a candidate for Mayor for the City of Thunder Bay in this fall’s municipal election.
Thunder Bay is at a critical time in its history and the Mayor needs to be a leader, a consensus builder and a diplomat. The City of Thunder Bay also needs someone with common sense at the helm of our Council. I believe that I can offer all those skills and then some.
Council’s leader is the collective voice of our community and it is vital that we have a Mayor who can present our needs to the Provincial and Federal Governments as those two orders of government have a fundamental impact on our economy and municipal finances. My first-hand experience at the Federal and Provincial level will assist the City of Thunder Bay in getting its messages across.
I will also bring to the position of Mayor a long-standing relationship with our neighbours, the people of the Fort William First Nation, along with my understanding of the needs of Indigenous people across the Northwest including the Metis. As a City we must do our part with regards to reconciliation along with a concerted effort to eliminate racism in our community.
My priority, and one that the next Council must focus on, is growing our community. If we are to tackle the growing cost of operating our city, we must attract new business, industry and economic opportunities, attract new residents and in doing so grow our tax base to pay for our existing infrastructure and services. At the same time, we must work harder to convince the Ontario Government to take on their responsibility for services that should be paid by them.
I will be conducting a modest, pay-as-you-go campaign, focussing on the issues of concern to the long-term future of this City and this region.
If you are interested in supporting my campaign by volunteering your time or making a donation please message me or email me at email@example.com. Please note that I cannot accept donations until after I have registered which will be some time in early May.”
