At 2:22 am this morning, Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Fort Hope Indian Reserve 64, the NISHNAWBE ASKI POLICE SERVICE responded to a fire at the Nursing Station. Upon arrival, the officers found the Chevy Suburban Medical Van in flames.

NAPS Officers began an immediate investigation and followed footsteps in the snow from the scene of the fire. NAPS located a 16-year-old female suspect as a result of tracking and interviewing witnesses. She was emitting a strong odour of alcohol and had a lighter in her possession.

She was placed under arrest by the NISHNAWBE ASKI POLICE and charged with arson.

Under the YOUTH CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT, the youth cannot be identified by name. I will refer to her as S.W.

Appearing this morning Saturday, April 7, 2018, via telephone from the NAPS Station in Thunder Bay Courtroom 104 is 16-year-old female youth S.W.

It’s W.A.S.H. (Weekend And Statutory Holiday) Court today. His Worship, Marcel Donio is presiding. Provincial Crown Shawn Dougherty is here along with Duty Counsel Lianne Roberge. She’s accompanied by 2 very eager students, Lindsay Kein and Jordan Scorgie from the law school.

The court hears from the father of S.W. who is at the NAPS Station in Fort Hope.

Crown Attorney Dougherty has concerns about releasing S.W. from jail due to the seriousness of this charge. A Thunder Bay Police Officer in the Courtroom performs a record check on father and other 3 siblings in the home. They have no criminal records. The Crown agrees to release S.W. to the care of her father with several conditions.

-A 100$ no deposit bail on S.W. and 100$ no deposit by the father.
-Her father will be surety
-She’s not to buy, possess or consume alcohol (court hears that Fort Hope is a dry Reserve)
-She’s to follow the rules of her father
-She’s not to possess any weapons or incendiary devices. No lighters, matches, fuel or accelerants.

Her next court appearance is April 26, 2018, in Fort Hope.
