(THUNDER BAY, ON) – On May 7, 2018 officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were contacted to assist rural fire departments with two separate fires that were reported.
At approximately 12:18pm, officers were advised of a grass fire on Ellis Road in Dawson Road Lots Township. Kaministiquia Volunteer Fire Department and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) responded. One outbuilding was destroyed.
At approximately 12:25pm, another fire was reported on Kivela Road in Lybster Township. South Gillies Fire Department, Nolalu Volunteer Fire Department and the MNR attended. Several outbuildings were destroyed. This fire was reported to have been ignited by a discarded cigarette butt.
Both fires resulted in property damage. Environment conditions at the time of the fires were very dry.
A third fire, on John Street Road, was dealt with by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue. It was a small grass fire that was extinguished quickly.
