(THUNDER BAY, ONT) – A REAL Concerned Citizen has reached out to the news team at TRCCTB.COM to report a scam that she was targeted in.
”Hi, I just got this text and, using a different computer, I went to that web addresses and it shows a tax refund and to select a bank. No action was taken on my part….just wanted to spread the word ?“ Faith stated to the TRCCTB.COM news team.
The scam attempts to get people to login to their online banking to deposit a sum of $73.32 for a “tax refund”. This is not legitimate and your banking information will be compromised if you follow through with attempting to deposit this non-existent money.
TRCCTB.COM went ahead and clicked the Royal Bank option, in which a clone of the Royal Bank online banking website was produced. This website is fraudulent and is set up to fool the victim into thinking it is legitimate.
If you look at the above screenshot, the website address is not the Royal Bank’s address, but is of shellshomecare.com, which we highlighted in red.
Our investigation of shellshomecare.com revealed the website domain was purchased 1 week and 6 days ago, most likely for the sole purpose of committing fraud.
TRCCTB.COM would like to remind the general public not to accept e-mail money transfers that they are not expecting, and to exercise extreme caution even when they are expected.
Please contact the Thunder Bay Police Service at 807-684-1200 to report any fraudulent activities that you may suspect. If you do not live in the city of Thunder Bay, please contact your local police service.
