(ONTARIO) – One of the largest forest fires in northern Ontario is now considered to be under control according to the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Parry Sound 33, located roughly 100km from the city of Parry Sound has destroyed many homes and buildings, as well as evacuated hundreds of people from their homes this summer.
The fire is still very large, ranging 11,362 hectares in size. The Ministry says that the fire is now expected to stay within the controlled boundaries that the fire crews have created.
Fire crews continue to make great progress, using air support and infrared scanning when necessary.
The 200 evacuees from Henvey Inlet First Nation have returned home and the ministry is working on determining when other evacuees could return home safely.
Although Parry Sound 33 is under control, there are still more than 120 active fires in Ontario at this moment.
The Government has provided over $100 million on resources to help fight these wildfires.
