(THUNDER BAY, ON) – Appearing in courtroom 104 to set a date for a bail hearing via video from the Thunder Bay District Jail is 70-year-old Michael Danial Bewcyk.
Her Worship, Zelda Kitchekeesick is presiding, along with Piera Pasloski as the Crown Attorney, and Marylynn Thompson as the duty council representative.
Bewcyk was called up first on the list today, at the request of the bench. When it was asked why he was brought up first, it was indicated to the court that due to a massive amount of media attention, the courtroom had been full during his last two appearances.
Today, there was only myself and 1 other person in the courtroom opposing Bewcyk’s release. We need to pump those numbers up, people.
When Bewcyk was asked about what, if any progress he has made with his lawyer of choice George Joseph, Bewcyk responded indicating that he has only been able to reach Joseph’s voicemail, and has not made contact yet.
After some discussion, Bewcyk is remanded into custody until a September 4th, 12:45 pm appearance in courtroom 104 to hopefully set a date for his bail hearing, depending on if he secures a lawyer.
A common misconception is that the courts can deny a person the chance to have a bail hearing. Just because someone is going to a bail hearing, does not mean they will get bail. Everyone has a right to have a bail hearing, but it does not guarantee one will be released.
The court has heard allegations of Bewcyk allegedly grooming two severely underage girls, beginning at a church, then followed them to a mall, then left the mall with them, where he put one of them on the back of his ebike and took off with her.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers happened to notice the girl without a helmet on, and swooped in to see what was going on.
Bewcyk was charged, due to being a sex offender and have a court ordered prohibition to not be around anyone under 16 years of age.
