(THUNDER BAY, ON) – Thieves stealing from vehicles overnight and even during the day has become a epidemic in Thunder Bay.
These criminals are becoming more and more brazen as time goes on, with some of them smashing the vehicles window and stealing the whole car.
A few people have had their stolen vehicles located days later, abandoned with used needles, crack pipes and empty alcoholic beverages spread evenly throughout the interior of the vehicle.
In the video below you will see what we like to call the “average car hopper”, who typically will just do a lock check on a door, and if locked, they will proceed to the next vehicle.
This is the most common type of car-hopper Thunder Bay has, as most criminals out engaging in this activity do not want to deal with the loud noises that come along with breaking into the vehicle.
That being said, if you leave something of value in your vehicle that is visible, the risk-reward balance may be adjusted on the fly.
The OPP encourage all vehicle owners to do simple things to decrease the risk of being victimized, such as:
- Never leave a running vehicle unattended
- Lock your doors
- Alarm your vehicle if equipped
- Roll up your windows
- Keep valuables out of sight
- Pocket your keys
- Always park in a well-lit area
- Keep your registration and proof of insurance in your wallet or purse, not in the glove box
