(THUNDER BAY, ON) – Earlier this week a townhouse located at 6 Trillium Way was the subject of a fatal fire.
The fire engulfed the first floor with smoke billowing out of windows on the second floor and the rear main floor.
A woman escaped certain death by jumping out of the rear window on the second floor, landing on the stairs to the back door and being taken to hospital for what has been called “serious injuries”.
A male perished in the fire, and was located by firefighters shortly after the blaze on the mai floor was extinguished.
Appearing in a Thunder Bay bail court this morning is 48-year-old Tracey Mawakeesic. His Worship, Justice of the Peace LeClair was presiding, along with Crown Attorney Gordon Fillmore and duty counsel lawyer Arturo Acosta.
Mawakeesic has been charged with:
- Criminal negligence causing death
- Criminal negligence causing bodily harm
Her alleged victim, 30-year-old Kyle Stoney is now deceased, and 23-year-old Martina Wesley is seriously injured.
The Crown is opposed to her release, and it is requested that she return tomorrow by video for her counsel to appear for her.
Her choice of lawyer, Kate Brindley, did not appear in court this morning.
Mawakeesic is sent back to her cell to await her court date tomorrow.
