(KENORA, ON) Members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Marine and Trails Unit (MTU), Emergency Response Team (ERT) and The Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) are investigating an incident on Lake of the Woods.
On Monday October 15, 2018 at approximately 8:45 p.m, the OPP were notified of three males missing on Lake of the Woods, near Manitou Island.
Police learned that the vessel capsized and the males did not resurface.
Two of the males have been located deceased, the search continues to locate the third male.
42-year-old Marshall Morrison and 50-year-old John Copenace have been confirmed dead. We have information that leads us to believe that the third male, Birdy Major (age unconfirmed) was found yesterday deceased.
The Ontario Provincial Police’s Emergency Response Team were already in the area searching for Kirkrude JR when the call for the capsized vessel came in.
Police have done a phenomenal job performing the search, many of them going 36 hours or so without sleep. After searching all day for Kirkrude, the 911 call came in for the capsized boat which then resulted in police search teams working through the night.
Members of the community and TRCCTB.COM would like to thank the police for their hard work and dedication.
The investigation is continuing.
