(GRASSY NARROWS FIRST NATION, ON) – In the early morning hours of October 22nd, 2018, two uniformed members of the Treaty Three Police Service Kenora Detachment were assaulted during the arrest of a male subject in Grassy Narrows First Nation territory.
Both offficers were treated for minor injuries and later released from the Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
The officers were attempting to arrest a male known to be wanted on outstanding charges by both the Treaty Three Police Service and Ontario Provincial Police.
The male was failing to comply with his bail conditions. He was previously released on an undertaking.
Once the accused was observed by police, the male attacked one of the officers which caused the accused and an officer to fall to the ground.
The second officer attempted to assist his partner that was on the ground with the suspect when members of the community approached and surrounded the scene.
Community members assisted the male in escaping police custody.
Police have engaged in an investigation surrounding this incident and charges are pending against the male and those who helped him escape police.
