(RED LAKE, ON) – On Sunday, November 4, 2018 at approximately 11:15 am, a late model pick-up truck was travelling northbound on Highway 105 went it left the roadway and collided with two boulders and a tree.
The truck’s fuel tank ruptured and caught fire. A civilian witness came upon the scene and located two occupants in the truck but was unable to get them out due to the heavy damage the vehicle sustained and returned to his vehicle to call 911.
At that time, officers from the Red Lake/Ear Falls Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol when they observed a large plume of smoke just south of the intersection of Highway 105 and 125 and attended the scene.
Officers observed the vehicle to be engulfed in flames and with the assistance of the civilian, attempted to assist the two occupants out of the vehicle. They were successful in removing the passenger.
The Red Lake Fire Department as well as Kenora District Services Board Emergency Medical Services both attended to assist.
The passenger was transported to the Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead a while later.
Both occupants of the vehicle died and their identities will be released once next of kin notification is complete.
