(THUNDER BAY, ON) – A number of reports came into our newsroom today about the possible dead body found in Current River.
Citizens have reported a large police presence, along with Superior North EMS arriving on location, but left shortly after without extracting anyone.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue was also on location initially, but have also left the scene, leaving only the Thunder Bay Police Service officers remaining.
Forensics is on scene already.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue later returned to the scene to help recover the body.
Details are thin at this time, but residents in the area have told us that they believe a dead body was located.
There is an area taped off with police tape around the train tracks.
We are going to call it that a dead body was found.
Please avoid the area, and allow our police officers to work.
Update @ 5:00 pm: Police confirm what we already said about this being a dead body with this media release at 4:40 pm.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers responded to reports of a deceased individual near a walking trail close to Strathcona Golf Course at about 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018.
Police were dispatched to the area after a passerby saw what they believed to be a body.
Police are holding the scene and are in the early stages of an investigation.
No other information is available at this time.
(UPDATE 8:00 am Thursday) We went to the scene after police had cleared out and found some grey clothing material that looks consistent with how paramedics cut clothing off someone when they are trying to revive them.
