(THUNDER BAY, ON) – The Mac’s on Simpson was the victim of a robbery last night, as we reported shortly after it happened.
Police were quick to apprehend the suspect, and he needed some medical attention. The suspect was apparently brought to the hospital.
Appearing in bail court this morning is 33-year-old Blake Kowalchuk.
Her Worship, Justice of the Peace Denette Maslach was presiding.
Crown Attorney Derrick Silvestro and duty counsel lawyer Stella are also present.
Kowalchuk is facing the following charges:
- Uttering death threat to police x2
- Breach of bail conditions (no alcohol)
Kowalchuk also has 7 outstanding charges. One of the charges being a mischief under $5000 charge and 6 other unnamed charges stemming from Winnipeg.
The Crown is not consenting to his release and cites the secondary grounds as a concern along with a partial tertiary ground.
The tertiary ground stems from the death threats made to police.
Secondary ground concerns indicate that the Crown believes the accused will reoffend or become a public safety concern. Tertiary grounds tell us that the Crown believes that if the accused were to be released, the public would lose confidence in the administration of justice.
The Crown further asks for a no-contact order in regards to two people, who are the clerks of the store that was alleged to have been robbed.
Duty counsel requests the matter be remanded to Monday, so that Kowalchuk’s lawyer of choice may be contacted and form a bail plan.
Justice of the Peace Maslach orders Kowalchuk to be kept in jail until his Monday appearance, where he may have another crack at getting released.
