(THUNDER BAY, ON) – There was an alleged incident caught on video last evening that appears to have the sound of someone spitting and then a reaction from a Thunder Bay Police officer.

Below is the full video:

“The youth called the ambulance for a different individual who needed help. The young girl in the gurney was being transported to the hospital because of how highly intoxicated she was, and was clearly in distress with the seatbelt restraints and didn’t want to be in them. She was not being arrested, so she wasn’t “resisting”.” – Latisha Hardy

The Thunder Bay Police Service have yet to make public comments about the situation.

The video went viral overnight with over 170,000 views, garnering attention from many people and media outlets.

The youth is said to be a 17-year-old Indigenous girl by Nishnawbe Aski Nation.

Thunder Bay Police Service civilian employee Chris Adams told The Canadian Press as reported by CTV News that the force is aware of the video and are investigating. The civilian employee declined to comment further. Chris Adams is not a police officer.

Chief of Police Sylvie Hauth has yet to address the situation.

Complaints have likely been filed with the OIPRD, political officials, etc.

”…when the police entered the home after calling the ambulance for a different individual they treated these kids like they had weapons on them and slammed them into the walls…” says a confidential source. The holes in the walls mentioned earlier were already there.

  1. Unfortunately, our new Police Chief will take the “politically correct” road and will suspend the officer in question as this will be her 1st big test, I just hope the Police Chief can see “Race Baiting” for what it is and not bend over for the squeaky wheels.

    1. If I spit on anyone I would expect to get smacked… never mind spitting on a cop… maybe a few more smacks from her parents and she would have not been in that situation… suck it up… if you spit you get hit… and deserve it…

  2. Proper training &would teach police persons to never react with such emotion. This is disgraceful behavior & clear abuse of power.

    1. I think they showed a lot of restraint. Some is struggling and spitting on on anyone should know there is going to be some sort of retaliation. Funny how the person videotaping concentrated on the ground at first and only on the suspect when they knew there would be retaliation from the police. Tape the whole thing or put your camera back in your pocket.

    2. Brian, sometimes people are afraid to have the camera in thier hand recording, if the cop had known that there was a device that had been recording, do you think the cop would have hit the girl to begin with? Anyways, the time was perfect, eaxctly.. perfe t to show that the cop hit a child in restraints. Therefore, legally, by law, and human rights tribunals, the officer was wrong. If nothing is done about this, I say bring it to Supremem Courts and have the Queen her Majesty deal with this accordingly. And the parent/caregiver should do that, lawyer up and go all the way.
Nathalie, I agree, qith proper training, this officer would not have let a little bit of spit let get to her. Theres underlines issues involved here, where as the officer cannot controle her own feelings with something I feel, I FEEEEEEL was a reaction done by hate. Only saying I Feeeel, not saying its teue. Only in question. Because obviously theres gives no right for an officer to behave in sich matter. The comme t above would talk about “Race Bait”, that person is not marginalized by the people who treat FNs in such ways.
As for this facebook post of the youth?? Inthink she may be so used to feeling like shes at fault for any situation that would bring negative attention. Sorry to say, but thats been embedded since the bad old days of SILENCING THE NATIVES IN R.S’s in my opinion. She cant even comprehend that the officer in question was still in the wrong for what she had done. Clearly the video shows that the officsr had fist slammed her in the face, how does anyone deny that when its on video? Sadly because of how this youth was programmed emotionally and mentally, its psychological effects of how she was raised. Imagine the deeper issues her (or others) have been through and still think its thier fault? Now this youth is talking about commiting suicide, because of this social drama and bullying that is said, directed towards her. I hope she will have enough support to save her from the humiliation and despair of low self esteem, discomfort, and how she feels about this. Her self worth already seems compromised in her own explanation to what had taken place. Hopefully she will overcome this and I do hope that itll change her for the bigger fight thats ahead, and she will be the leader when that times comes.

Its digusting how some would say “well she got spat on, how else is the cop going to react?”.
Its totally wrong no matter what, pretty sure this cop dealt with worse, but obviously didnt know there was a camera on her. Proving how innocent the youth was at this specific moment.

    3. And it’s ok to spit on a cop? Would have been more than 1 punch… now the cop has to go get tested for aids and hep… you spit on a cop.. ya deserve what you get.

  3. F**k that people need to learn they cant get away with everything. Their f***in lucky that’s all they got
Sick and tired of the public attacking law enforcement. They have such a hard job against impossible odds and get no support.
They do so much good for this s**t hole city and never get any praise then one poorly edited video comes up and they are vilified
F**k anyone who doesn’t support TBPS

    1. Uhm… did the youth not say she was “out of her mind”? Therefore ya… maybe she spit on her… who cares? Yes spit can be dangerous… so can a punch, so can whiplash, so can a trailer hitch!!!! People in this city mske me sick… the officer is on duty… ut is her job and she is trained… therefore you do your f***ing job and if you got spit on you did your job wrong. Protect yourself… safety first right?! You need to know ANYTHING could happen and you must be prepared… is that difficult YES, but that is the job YOU signed up for and wanted to be a part of. When people are intoxicated you basically treat them like they aren’t really there… they are not coherent and therefore there is no point in questioning them or anything like that… you wait until they are sober… and fill the report out then when things are safe. This incident is so obvious and straight forward I’m just shocked (not really) at the comments and people in this city who just want to open their mouths and have no real compashion for humans and who say more about themselves when they open their mouths with ignraont bulls**t spewing in every direction than they do about anyone involved in these types of incidents. I for one am tired of this race war… just f***ing stop people. STOP. The colour of your skin doesn’t decide what happens in your life… it’s the people around you… you neighbors, your friends, your family… take care of eachother… and maybe people… wouldn’t react with spitting or punching or any rediculous or violent behavior. Put your blame and judgement aside for once and GROW UP! Stop looking around with your eyes and look with your feelings… look with your mind… cuz at this rate y’all look stupid… dumbfounded… stupid!!!! I have worked all over this city in retail and I have seen it all and heard it all and rolled my eyes ENOUGH!!! I’m tired of keeping my opionions to myself! You are all extremely racist… very few are not and FINALLY SOME people are starting to see things turn around, but the extremes are still out there… continuing on this bad name we have going for our city. Take off your rose coloured glasses, say no to the blame game, stop baiting, stop pretending you are better than anyone else… you are all a disgrace to our city and if you don’t change nothing will ever change and all the children will grow up with HATE!!!! I will blame you. You who decides to spread and teach hate and allow it to thrive everyday instead of making that change. MAKE THAT CHANGE! MAN IN THE MIRROR STYLE! I believe in t-bay… Now Thunder Bay needs to believe in itself! ❤👌✌

  4. Not disgraceful and definitely not an abuse of power there snowflake. Lucky there wasn’t a beat down after being spat on.

    1. Although the act of spitting can be and IS called assault, 1) u can only use force that is reasonable to stop an attacker causing harm to yourself your property or another person. If it is reasonable to step away from any possible follow up spitting, AND IT WAS then the only reasonable force necessary is force it takes to step to the side a few feet. 2)the asshole cop with obvious issues had just clearly stated she was being combative for no reason , as soon as a subject being strapped or cuffed to a gurney against their will who is en route for medical evaluation clearly, gave off the combative vibe , this unstable bitch your defending should have retrieved the spitmask she has available and was TRAINED to use as a preventive measure and safety concern… but chose to act out in a way that SCREAMS the spit containing disease bacteria or viruses(which is the reason spitting constitutes assault in the first place) wasn’t her concern at all instead it was personal revenge . The moment she chose to risk exposing herself to more spit and now likely blood as well to splatter in a highvelocity mist maybe into eyes/mouth etc … these things combined paint a picture that is not in the public’s best interest🤷🏻‍♂️ What did that strike to the face while restrained possibly serve or protect? Remember that officer swore an oath to uphold the constitution and within it contains charter rights stating that she has the right to LIFE(which could have been ended by one wrong blow to the head while in medical distress) LIBERTY( that was taken when she believed she was being wrongfully forcibly confined/assaulted all she had left was use of her mouth and words were not being listened to so she took the liberty of spitting either in protest or maybe had a fkn hair in her mouth annoying her 🤷🏻‍♂️) and freedom that was taken in many ways but most importantly the officer was also Free and had the liberty of choosing tobeither hurt orvprotect this person who is innocent until proven guilty not to mention possibly intoxicated mental issue in need of hospital **keep in mind the struggling to strap her down didn’t stop a falsely nice forced voiced saying”your just going to the hospital but all of a sudden there’s a possible excuse to claim she was fighting for her life and took an opportunity to smash an Indian in the face show powerstruggle type anger issue clenching her teeth fkn forcing all the weight on person face n mouth muttering thru grinding teeth like she just WISHED SHE WASNT BEING FILMED so she could let out all her biased aggression on “just another Indian in tbay she hates dealing with everyday and would beat her ads make her run scared without a gun and a army with her lmao it’s clearly uncalled for anger issues biased prejudice no control in her personal life drama 100% …. what happened to the right to a fair trial?!?! Ok she fkn spit at me I’m gunna get protective mask n gloves and right that in my report for a judge to deal with since she’s tied on a fuckin stretcher no continued threat at all, that’s at least 4 rights n freedoms denied right there while restrained all that was necessary was a quick sidestep left n retrieval of protective gear buuuuyt she’s a cunt end of fuckin story bud!

    2. Ooops i commented on the wrong reply button. Lmao. Anyways Coookie, if my comment gets uhmm, approved for posting on the other ones. That was actually meant for this piece.
Im totally stressing right now, that I am on board im with you. Everythig you said was legit exact the same I thought. We on the same energy waves here. Highfive. Thanks for being strong. Am I agreeing with what you have said, by all means in your right to express? Remember, Our Canadian Constitution will aknowledge this. So yessss. Affirmative. I am in accordance.

    1. Woowww. Im still reading over your darn good reply.
Hands down exactly what I thought.
We on that same high five kinds of deal here.

    2. Wow… Cookie has all the answers… must be a lawyer and psychologist by the was she knows everything…. woe is me the native girl… all the cops hate up…boo hop…obey the law and ya won’t get b***h slapped.

    1. What would you do if u were spit on.. u gunna sit there and take it? Where did u learn that , swinging hammer in a Hollywood basement ?

  5. I smell bullshit, in the full video you can hear the EMT person telling the cop that she doesn’t know why she keeps hitting her (the emt) that shes only going to to the hospital, cop steps in gets spat on gets the old spit on me slap like in the olden days. so yes clearly she was resisting.

  6. People like to side with that police…what would you do if this was your child? Exactly!! This shit ain’t right!!!

    1. What would I do you ask? If my kid acted like this one did not only would I thank the officer for smacking my kid my kid would fear me more when she got home. I wouldn’t beat on her but a good smack or two along with other punishment. The next day after she sobered up I would take her to the police station and paramedics and have her apologize to their face. That’s how you discipline your child. Remember there are at least two strikes against that girl. One she was drinking under age (yes we all do it but it’s still against the law), second she assaulted a paramedic and a cop.

    2. Uhm… did the youth not say she was “out of her mind”? Therefore ya… maybe she spit on her… who cares? Yes spit can be dangerous… so can a punch, so can whiplash, so can a trailer hitch!!!! 3. Shake the officers hand for teaching my kid some respect. Because if they are behaving like that, then clearly my parenting would be the s**ts

  7. Sue the police department for sure… abusing a child is f***ing pathetic… wouldn’t be tough without that suit on..

    1. Sue the police really! Another idiot that doesn’t know what they’re talking about. The girl admitted she deserved the hit and it was a slap not a punch.

  8. Omg! Such an aggressive police officer who can’t control her anger on a youth. Shame on the officer with such abuse. If it was someone who wasn’t native I don’t think she would of went that far. Hopefully she is off the job right now.
    – From a Concerned Citizen in Thunder Bay

    1. honestly i dont think it had anything to do with racism, native or white or whatever it is enrageing when you get spit in the face!! it was wrong the way the officer reacted and im sure she regrets it.
the youth however was intoxicated (from what ive gathered) so she was all worked up and did soemthign without thinking it through, so honestly i feel noone is at fault here, yes there were 2 wrongs, and yes it was very very bad what the officer did, but instead of makeing the officer lose her job why not have her go to soem kind of program like anger managemnet or soemthing, and also a public appolgie for her actions as a public servant.

  9. Every police officer should have to wear body cams all the time and document their shit always
However being spit on doesn’t warrant choking hitting or harming a person tied to a stretcher
If this was your 17 year old you wouldn’t being saying oh that was reasonable what she did to her .. nope not at all and yup if she was white that wouldn’t of happened in the same way at all

  10. I wonder if the police officer beats her own children when they misbehave. CPS should be involved in her personal life if she has children of her own. She needs to be investigated for her aggressive behaviour and punished. That was a hard slap heard on video and this is Scary for Native students they will never trust the police. Send this cop to a reserve up north and maybe she will develop some empathy

    1. Here’s an idea – how about people don’t act like jackasses towards authorities?
Problem solved. No need for any one to be scared of police.
Treat them with respect, don’t do dumb shit and your interactions will always be positive.

      Your a liberal correct?
So people’s feelings are top priority, above respect for the law – and a paramedic trying to do their job.

  11. sounds to me she slapped her twice
I can hear a slap and same exact slap sound again…the Ems should be held accountable also…Ems should of told the angry police to stop.

    1. I wouldn’t call it a slap. It looks like a hard smack with her aggressive anger on the youth. Thank goodness the guy was recording at the right place and time or the police woman could of got away with her actions.

    2. Not EMS job to get involved in police matters they were there to get girl to.hospital. why should they stick their neck out ro steo between a pussed off officer. Easy for you.to talk behind a keyboard.

  12. Cookie.. whatever kind of psycho babble you wrote it made absolutely no fkn sense. There were two wrongs here so it cancels each other out. There were two assaults but I side with the police officer who puts up with drunk annoying people every night. Maybe she slapped her to make sure she was awake so she didn’t pass out? 😜

  13. First off where are the parents ? why is a seventeen year old drunk out of her mind , there is no respect from this girl , I would hate to have to deal with the shit these police officers have to deal with every day . Maybe the little slap to her face will make her realize that she was in the wrong and should apologize to the police office for trying to do her job , spitting in someone’s face is a form of assault and could be Potentially deadly if the spitter has some sort of Disease, I’m not condoning violence this is self defence as in which is a right to everyone.

  14. That’s a bunch of bulls**t and you know it if that was your relative I bet you would be singing a different tune all they have to do is charge the suspect with assault they are police not a f***in gang but sometimes they act like it they are people in power show some damn restaint you know people are always watching so dummy the hell up!!

  15. What would do if it were your child? I would be taking this “woman” to court. Nobody has the right to hit a child!! Don’t matter what color your skin is, that kid was in restraints, what could she do!? Pathetic policing. Weak ass butch!!

  16. Ok “cookie” first of all were you drunk when you wrote your uneducated and lack of knowledge of what happened. I totally agree with Brian about how the video was shot. Knowing what those officers went through from inside information that woman officer was totally in her right to smack that person as she did. Funny how that video didn’t show the arm flinging and resistance along with the assault to the ambulance personnel from the intoxicated person. I give that officer all the credit in the world restraining as much as she did. I know if that was me being spat on I would have hit that person a lot more than the officer did and I’m sure a lot of others would do the same. All those that enjoy blaming the police for the actions they take on individuals who in most cases deserve what they get I say put yourself in their shoes before opening your mouth. To deal with the constant badgering being spat on and assaulted by drunken fools constantly. I give those officers all the credit in the world putting up with that crap day in and day out. No thanks not me . Lastly to all those “victim” supporters I say to you. Without ALL knowledge of the situation your comments are errelavant due to lack of facts. One fact that’s for sure is the girl they were trying to help that was not cooperating with both police and paramedics assaulted the officer first by grotesquely spitting in her face. Both police and paramedics go to help this person and this is the thanks they get. Now that cop has to go through serious health shots and hopefully that girl doesn’t have anything that can be a health risk to herself and the officer.

    1. It’s the cops job to take it. The risks are known when they start the job. They can only use equal force so in this situation, only thing to stop it would be by covering her mouth or putting one of those mesh bags over her head. Hitting is going to far. Watch her get time off with pay and have to go through some retraining.

  17. spitting on someone has got to be the most disrespectful thing someone can do. There is not enough video here to criticize the police. what happened before why was that not recorded? I don’t condone police abusing there power such as when they turn there sirens on just to get through a red light and hit Tim Horton’s up for coffee and donuts or physical abuse such as this., but again not enough of the events have been recorded here.

  18. Ummm…highly intoxicated 17 year old? Where did the alcohol come from and why was she allowed to consume so much if any at all? This does not exclude the officer from any sort of repercussions due to her actions. The officer should immediately be suspended until an investigation is fully conducted. In the meantime, the officer should be seeking an anger management course to find resolve to her anger issues and should pay out of her own pocket and not tax payers footing the bill. Officer, you crossed the line. You were appointed to serve and protect the public but you chose extreme physical abuse of a minor. Shameful. As for the young girl, please stay away from alcohol and the people who get the alcohol for you. Such as the officer, they have no good intentions for you health and safety either.

  19. If you spit at the police, that deserves a beat down. Diseases can be transmitted through saliva. It doesn’t matter what colour your skin is, you assault the police.. you are gonna get a reaction. She got off lightly to be honest and being native had nothing to do with it.

  20. And if the person on the stretcher was white nobody would be saying shit….
Maybe the solution is to send all these students back where they came from?

  21. Wow so professional of the police officer even when protecting yourself from being assaulted you can be chagred if you use to much force I myself have been charged for protecting myself against someone who started assaulting me so yes there is a thing such as excessive force and this officer has no restraint at all !!! DIDNT EVEN THINK TWICE ABOUT IT YOU CAN TELL NOT HER FIRST TIME USING EXCESSIVE FORCE !!! ITS POLICE OFFICERS LIKE THIS THAT GIVE ALL COPS A BAD NAME

  22. in the states if u spit on a cop you don’t get slapped you get clapped. To be honest I would of rather been punched in the face then spit on. I would consider spotting much worse then being punched.. you know what happens when you punch a cop? You get ur ass handed to you.. imagine what would of happened if a cop got spit on.. oh wait .. a slap.. but go play the race card NAN and Fiddler. This is not racism this is life. You don’t hit or spit at cops, if you do.. put yourselves in the cops shoes .. what would you do if u got spit on.

  23. I am thinking if the police and paramedic just threw up their hands and walked away they would not be held accountable if that intoxicated child died of alcohol poisoning or passed out in an alley and froze to death? Just saying

  24. A kid spit in my kids face not once but twice..so according to everyone I should have slapped the kid in the face for spitting on my child ? That cop was so close to that kids face yelling and probably spitting on her doing it !

  25. They do have spit shields that they can put over the face of a person who insists on spitting. The teen being excessively intoxicated had (in some versions of report) fallen and banged her head…. so smacking them In the head and what appears to be choking someone who may already have a head injury should NEVER happen regardless of situation. That officer should be able to maintain her composure. Is this teen someone from a Rez who has been forced to attend school in Thunder Bay? Maybe she doesn’t have family here, I’m sure her family has taught her respect but sometimes our teachings fly out the window when we aren’t in the right mind. Some of you are so ignorant it’s disgusting!!! In my opinion, both the teen and the officer should face the repercussions of their actions. So many people on here are so judgmental and fail to acknowledge that their own halos aren’t so shiny.

  26. To the girl that was slapped/punched I,m sorry this happened to you.
We have all done stupid things when were drunk. and yes oh my god shes 17 and drinking wow i’m sure that’s a first.
Obviously we don,t know any of the story from this video but id like to raise a couple points.
Health care workers in emerg etc get spit on all the time and if they did this to a patient they would be fired on the spot .period!
I’m sure its very frustrating to be a cop in this city where the very population you are trying to protect have no trust/respect for you and whatever you do/say never seems to be good enough but that’s the reality so if you cant deal with it leave or get a desk job
I’m sure this wasn’t the cops first rodeo dealing with a drunk person, she should have known better.

  27. Here we go, another page full of idiots defending a snowflakes right to act like an imbecile and expect there should be no repercussions. Learn the hard way, you act like an a****le you get treated like an a****le. She got slapped upside the head – WAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Did she die? NOPE. Over and done with, time to move on.

  28. I have been reading these comments, and i am dismayed why some people think that this was race related. The sad part is that these fine people that become police officers to protect and serve the people are put through such crap by people who do not give the situation much thought. Remember that officer is reacting in a split second as designed in the training that they received to become officers in the first place. Police officers are also human, indeed they make mistakes as well as any other citizen of this country. What if the circumstances of this officer in particular were that she had been taking or had just finished taking the cocktail of drugs given after coming in contact with a dirty needle or infected individual. I for one would be more cognizant about bodily fluids after undergoing the drug regimen. It would not matter to me at that time what race the individual was or age or gender for that matter. But we have hours and days to view the video, however the lead up to the interaction is not shown. Good people, this is not race related, I think we have to give a thumbs to the fine officers and all that they face everyday on the job. How would you know if the person that just spit in your face had a disease that could threaten your life, or that every person that you came face to face with has the potential to give you a life altering disease. These officers face it every day. HOW WOULD YOU REACT IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES?

  29. If I spit on a cop or anybody in general I would expect that person to not really take that too kindly. This cop did nothing wrong, the girl’s lucky it was this cop and not some random stranger on the street for who knows what would have happened to her then if she thinks spitting is the answer. As for the camera guy, good job bringing “awareness.” I’d say all you’ve done is created a situation wayyy more drastic than what appears. I’ve had worse done to me by police and you know what, I deserved it! I was young, dumb and up to no good before too. Nothing wrong here at all, you should be embarrassed as well as anyone else thinking this is in any way police brutality. Unbelievable!!!

  30. I agree that this is NOT a race related matter. The officer reacted to an assault and to me may have mildly overreacted given be circumstances. If the girl was white, black or yellow the outcome would likely have been the same. Perhaps a reprimand might be in order or even an anger management session but in no way should this officer be more heavily penalized.

  31. Why is there even a debate on the unethical behavior of this local cop? Clearly protocol/training was breached, as was also the Criminal Code, Police Services Act, Human Rights Code, as well the rights of the Suspect enshrined in the Charter. Due to this misconduct/misbehavior of this vigilante cop – an inference of discrimination could be drawn from this incident – as the cop deviated from the norm – by taking the law into her own hands, becoming the Judge/Executioner, and making herself, her employer, as well as the City of Thunder Bay liable for both criminal/civil actions through the courts. Unpleasant as it may sound for those who continue to unconditionally support this cop – it’s what the law is – and it’s applicable in this case.

As for those who state that there is no racism involved – what would be the reaction if the suspect was white, and the cop black/native?

Wouldn’t there be loud cries of ‘Go Back To……’ and ‘Lock Her up’ for the cop.

And for the white suspect “Awwwww – give her a break, she’s just a kid having fun’.

    Think about it.
