(THUNDER BAY, ON) – NORTHERN AUTHOR AND LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY EMPLOYEE/STUDENT SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT. GEORGE KENNY WILL SPEND 10 YEARS ON THE SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY.
A 70-year-old GEORGE KENNY appeared in Courtroom 102 yesterday afternoon on Thursday December 15, 2018 before Her Honour, Justice Elaine Burton to be sentenced for sexual assault on a young Lakehead University student whom he hired to be a Personal Support Worker.
GEORGE KENNY was charged for the June 17,2016 sexual assault and found guilty after a trial was held earlier this year.
KENNY is wearing a plaid bush jacket with track pants and in a wheelchair as a result of a recent stroke. He’s accompanied by his wife. He has a large hump on the left side of his upper back. He’s represented by local lawyer Richard Curtis.
KENNY had sent sexually explicit emails to the worker prior to the assault which is an aggravating factor as well as being her employer and breaching of trust. He did not express remorse during the trial for his actions. A victim impact statement was presented to the court. The young woman still struggles with the effects of the assault.
Despite having degrees from Lakehead University, KENNY tells the Judge that part of his brain is dead and that was the part that got him into trouble. He tells the court he’s still working on a Masters degree. Kenny is an anthropologist specializing in the Anishinaabe people of Lac Seul and the English River. He’s also a former columnist for the Chronicle Journal. He’s the author of “Indians Don’t Cry”
LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY kept their association with KENNY despite the fact of his criminal charge and conviction for sexual assault on one of their students. In fact, Lakehead University promoted KENNY and his book as recently as this past February.
Justice Burton has reviewed the presentence and Gladue reports and heard submissions from Crown Attorney Trevor Jukes and defence. KENNY is a former student of a residential school and so were his parents.
Justice Burton struggles with having probation and discharge as a sentence.
KENNY receives a conditional discharge with 2 years probation. He must notify Westway and any personal support workers of his Sex Offender Status. He must cooperate with probation, participate in programming and sign any releases required.
NO OTHER LOCAL MEDIA IS PRESENT. Don’t expect the Chronicle Journal to report on their former columnist. TBLAZYNEWSWATCH & CBC THUNDER BAY ARE ALLEGEDLY REFUSING TO NOTIFY THE PUBLIC ABOUT THIS SEX OFFENDER AT LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY.
