Appearing in Courtroom 102 today before His Honour Justice Gary Kunnas is 66 year old JEAN SKAF.

SKAF is about 5’4” tall, a bit paunchy and wearing a black and gray jacket. His hairline has receded quite a bit.

His lawyer David Young is trying to get a delay in sentencing so his client can get a heart test done on Friday. Crown Attorney Tamara Fairchild is not in favour of the proposed delay and His Honour agrees that further delays are unacceptable. Sentencing will proceed today.

On August 4, 2015 at 3 am, a 66-year-old JEAN SKAF broke into the Roma Bakery on Frederica Street West. He knew the door access codes. He brought with him 4 bags of paper towels along with flammable accelerants. This was all captured on video surveillance. SKAF set up the paper and accelerants on various pieces of the bakery equipment like the mixer, bun machine and oven and started the fire.

SKAF was fired from his job at the bakery the week prior to the arson.

The fire caused extensive damage to the bakery and closed the business for 7 months.

There is an apartment above the bakery but fortunately no one was there at the time.

The owner of the bakery was a well liked man in the community who sadly passed away about a year after this incident.

SKAF plead guilty to this a couple months ago and His Honour needs to sentence him.

The Crown wants a penitentiary term of at least 2 years for SKAF. Denunciation should be the prime objective. This was a planned act, a breach of trust and had an element of revenge. Defence lawyer Young counters that his client has health issues and feels 6 months should be appropriate.

SKAF was born in Lebanon and suffered a head injury when he was 21 years old from a grenade during s civil war there when he was in his garden.

SKAF came to Canada the following year and was involved in managing Skaf’s grocery store here in Thunder Bay.

SKAF is sentenced to 12 months at the Thunder Bay Correctional Center along with 12 months probation. He’s ordered not to have contact with the family members of the bakery owner.

There are 2 restitution orders out in place. One for $539 190.11 to be paid to the insurance company. The other for $5000 to be paid to the wife of the deceased owner. His Honour concedes that the likelihood of SKAF paying this restitution is highly unlikely.

Skaf is then handcuffed by TBPS Special Constable Jason and led out of the courtroom to begin serving his sentence. He’ll be released from custody in mid September 2019 if he behaves himself.

The Director of Communications at TBPS never put out a media release about this crime. Local taxpayer subsidized media are sitting in the courtroom playing on their phones and have no interest in reporting this.
