LOREN TROY MENZIES.
Provincial Crown Attorney Jane Ann McGill is present along with defence attorney Michael Hargadon and they have a joint submission for the court.
LOREN TROY MENZIES entered the LCBO on Cumberland Street February 1,2019 at 10:04am despite being prohibited to do so and stole a bottle of Kentucky Bourbon valued at 41.95$. TBPS were called and MENZIES was last seen running Northbound with 3 others.
Less than 3 hours later at 12:50pm he entered the same store and brazenly stole a bottle of Wisers Special Blend Whiskey valued at 40.10$.
Shortly after, in minus 23C weather, police were called to Max Pawn shop on Red River Road about a person outside trying to fight people. Police arrive to find MENZIES passed out and intoxicated on sidewalk with the 2 partially drunk bottles of alcohol on him. He’s arrested and brought to jail where he’s been since.
IN THE PAST YEAR ALONE, MENZIES HAS 11 CONVICTIONS FOR THEFT.
He doesn’t seem to be getting the deterrence message that has been sent by previous trips to jail.
MENZIE grew up in Oshawa and is the father of 2 children, 10 & 12 who reside in Round Lake. He’s a band member of Muskrat Dam.
His lawyer further states he’s an inter generational alcoholic. He does have a high school diploma and did do some college, but can’t seem to stop stealing and drinking.
“You should look into trying to be a father to your children and a productive member of society. You’re an alcoholic, you should look at getting help. There are plenty of programs available. It’s obvious you would have froze to death if police hadn’t come along ” His Honour Bishop tells Menzies as he passes sentence of 30 days in jail for each theft for a total 60 days.
With presentence custody of 12 days enhanced to 18, total time going forward is 42 days. He’ll be released from jail mid-March.
MENZIES has nothing to say when asked by the court.
He’s led out of courtroom to head back to jail.
Remaining charges against MENZIES are withdrawn by Crown.
No taxpayer subsidized media is present in courthouse.
