(DEER LAKE FIRST NATION, ON) – VIOLATING CONDITIONS IN DEER LAKE.
A 50 year old DOROTHY ANN MEEKIS appeared by telephone in W.A.S.H. (Weekend And Statutory Holiday) Court today, Monday February 18,2019 from the Nishnawbe Aski Lake Police Station in Deer Lake.
Her Worship, Zelda Kitchekeesic is presiding. Provincial Crown Katrina Van Kessel is here along with Duty Counsel Patricia Vo.
MEEKIS was arrested by NAPS last evening for allegedly violating a February 8,2019 undertaking condition by consuming alcohol.
She has outstanding charges of failing to attend court in Sandy Lake on January 5,2015 which resulted in a bench warrant. Also has outstanding impaired driving charge from 2015 in Sandy Lake.
Crown Attorney Kessel has concerns and is not consenting to the release of MEEKIS. Duty Counsel Vo has no plan in place and requests a Section 517 publication ban which means evidence and testimony at the bail hearing along with reasons given can not be publicized.
Apparently Duty Counsel Vo thinks there will be a large media turnout in Kenora and doesn’t want the jury trial to be affected.
Yes, this Duty Counsel seems to have no clue what she’s doing.
MEEKIS is being transported to Kenora and will appear in bail court there tomorrow morning.
