(THUNDER BAY, ON) – A late afternoon incident on Dawson Road has members of the Ontario Provincial Police, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and Superior North EMS kept busy.
Numerous pumper trucks and other vehicles responded to the scene of a vehicle on fire which appears to have spread into the ditch alongside the road.
Traffic was initially naturally reduced to one lane as the smoke billowed across the road, reducing viability to zero at times. Once first responders arrived, traffic was stopped in both directions and directed to turn around.
Traffic is now flowing through one lane with traffic control in place at Intola Road and Kussisto Road on Dawson. Please avoid the area for the time being.
Injuries are uncertain at this time. A resident in the area reports hearing a “loud bang” shortly before noticing this incident. We are not certain if the fire was a result of a collision.
Update: We have been told it was a tractor trailer that had the trailer brakes overheat and start a small fire. The “loud bang” was from a tire blowing out on the trailer. The driver disconnected the trailer from the tractor and pulled ahead 10 or so feet. The driver is said to have then called someone on the phone instead of using his extinguisher on the overheated brakes.
This is a developing story and we will update you on it as more information becomes available.
