39-year-old Thomas Nanokeesic was arrested and held for bail at the Nipigon OPP detachment. When bail court called that location this morning, initially no officers were available to conduct court. We were informed a substantial situation had officers tied up at the time. Later on in the day, court called back the Nipigon detachment and after some discussions, court was able to commence.

Justice of the Peace Jennifer Neill was presiding over court this morning, along with Crown Attorney Pasloski and duty counsel lawyer Andrew Desmoulin. Nanokeesic is facing the following criminal charges:

July 13th, 2019:

  • Assault on a woman.
  • Mischief causing damage under $5000 (window).
  • Mischief causing damage under $5000 (iPod).
  • Mischief causing damage under $5000 (Shirt).
  • Uttering threats to cause death.

  • Intent to enable committing an assault by choking.
  • Assault on a woman.

In Gorham Township, sometime in May:

  • Assault on a woman.

After hearing his charges, Nanokeesic mentions how these allegations are fabricated. The Justice of the Peace asks him not to comment on the allegations as that is not in his best interest at the moment. Further, he is told to speak to his lawyer in private about the situation.

The Crown is not consenting to Nanokeesic’s release today as these are serious allegations. Court hears that the Crown is intending to show cause as to why Nanokeesic should be detained. A request for Nanokeesic to not contact two people while he is in custody is made.

Duty counsel tells the court that he has spoken with Nanokeesic’s legal counsel and will email them an update on Nanokeesic as he is being remanded into custody until tomorrow.

Nanokeesic is ordered by the Justice of the Peace to not contact two people while in jail and to stay in jail until at least tomorrow when he will have another shot at getting released from jail. He is escorted back to his cell where he will wait until prisoner transport is available to take him to the overcrowded and understaffed Thunder Bay District Jail A.K.A. “The Algoma Bed & Breakfast”.
