On July 5, 2019 in the Ontario Court of Justice in Fort Frances, Justice of the Peace Jennifer Neill fined Byeong-ok Kim of Fort Frances $9,000 for unlawfully possessing six black bear gall bladders. The court heard that on two separate occasions in 2018 Kim bought bear gall bladders from conservation officers at his place of business.

In certain cultures, there is the traditional belief that black bear gall bladders have medicinal powers. The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act makes it illegal for a person to possess a black bear gall bladder that has been removed from the bearโ€™s carcass. It is also illegal to buy or sell game wildlife, except under specific circumstances.

Kim became the subject of a Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry investigation after information suggested he was buying black bear gall bladders. Detectives with the Intelligence and Investigations Section assisted conservation officers in Fort Frances with the special investigation that led to the charges and conviction.

Conservation officers with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry want to remind the public that buying and selling bear parts is illegal in Ontario.

Ministry conservation officers work tirelessly to help make sure we can all enjoy Ontarioโ€™s natural resources in a safe and respectful manner. To report a natural resource violation, call the ministry TIPS line at 1-877-847-7667 toll-free, or contact your local ministry office. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.

  1. Hard to believe that in today’s age of enlightenment that supposedly intelligent people would still be believing this b.s. about gall bladders, rhino horns, tiger dicks etc. They’re almost as bad as the most bogus and hypocritical of them all – religious beliefs.

  2. Those Conservation Officers should be charged for selling the bear gall bladders and be identified publicly

They are responsible for protecting animals

  3. I am so happy that he was caught. the comment made by the first person is so bang on, add shark fins, dogs etc. I am sure that these conservation officers were undercover trying to stop our loss of wildlife. If not they should be named publicly and fired. The person whom bought the gallbladders will probably get a slap on the hand and no jail time. My sister and husband were out by the lookout on the highway on their side by side and found a mother bear shot and cut open paws cut off and a baby bear tied by a noose on the neck in a tree dead. This is getting bad. That was last year.
