On March 30, 2018, a member of the Sioux Lookout Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a vehicle parked on Front Street in the Municipality of Sioux Lookout. The officer observed one of the occupants to have a lit cigarette inside the vehicle as well as another occupant who appeared to be under the age of 16.
The officer approached the vehicle to investigate the offence under the Smoke Free Ontario Act. During the investigation, the officer located a rifle in the back seat of the vehicle. The rifle had a loaded magazine inserted into it but there was not a round in the chamber. None of the occupants for the vehicle had a possession acquisition licence allowing them to be in care of the rifle.
A 73 year old male from New Saugeen First Nation was charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm and the firearm was seized. The male was given a court date of May 1, 2018.
The occupant who had the lit cigarette was issued a provincial offence notice for smoking tobacco in a motor vehicle while another person under the age of 16 years old is present contrary to the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, under Section 9.2(1).
