On Friday March 9th in Kenora, OPP arrested 30 year old John Berry and 32 year old Leanna Kaltenthaler. The couple allegedly had loaded firearms and an undisclosed quantity of Carfentanil which is incredibly toxic. A unit of carfentanil is 100 times as potent as the same amount of fentanyl, 5,000 times as potent as a unit of heroin and 10,000 times as potent as a unit of morphine.

The couple appeared separately by telephone from Kenora OPP in Thunder Bay WASH (Weekend and Statutory Holiday) Court this morning before Justice of the Peace John Guthrie.

Berry has 19 charges in total from last evening.
Federal Crown Ron Poirier is here and states that he is opposed to releasing bothย individuals. He indicates there is plenty of case law on guns and Carfentanil to be concerned on primary, secondary and tertiary grounds. This is a reverse onus situation. The provincial Crown echoes Poirierโ€™s concerns.

Berry has 4 different bail recognizances heโ€™s alleged to have breached. The bulk of his charges are breach of court orders.
Berry is no stranger to the legal process. Justice of the Peace Guthrie wants to remand Berry to bail court on Monday. Berry informs the court that his lawyer will be Danny Gunn from Winnipeg.

The Justice of the Peace begins to read the 19 charges to Berry, but Berry interrupts and states โ€œIโ€™m not going anywhere for a while, letโ€™s just put it over for 2 weeksโ€.

The Crown is content that Berry wants to waive reading of the charges and so is the Justice of the Peace.

Berry is being informed of his language rights, but interrupts again and states โ€œWith all due respect, letโ€™s just end this nowโ€.

And Berry is taken back to his jail cell by Kenora OPP. His next court appearance is on Monday, March 26,2018.

On March 1,2017 Ignace members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attempted to stop a motor vehicle on Highway 17, Dewan Township which is approximately 15 km east of Ignace.

The vehicle fled westbound towards Dryden and would not stop for Police. With the assistance of Dryden OPP, Dryden Police Service and Treaty 3 Police Service, one male was apprehended after his vehicle left the roadway in Wabigoon.

The male, who was the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, was uninjured.
John Berry was arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight while pursued by a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and failure to comply with recognizance and a probation order.

Next up is Leanna Kaltenthaler, she has loaded gun and Carfentanil charges as well. She is being remanded in custody until Monday March 12,2018 when she will appear in Kenora Court.
