(THUNDER BAY, ON) โ€“ Appearing in courtroom 104 this morning in the Thunder Bay Courthouse by video from the Thunder Bay Police Service station via video is 33-year-old Robert Morgan Coaster.

His Worship, Justice of the Peace Bruce Leaman is presiding, along with Crown Attorney Misbah Haque and duty counsel lawyer Arturo Acosta.

Coaster is alleged to have breached his bail conditions and has also been charged with a theft from a local LCBO outlet.

He also failed to attend court on September 11th, which was his first court appearance regarding charges that stem from a August 13th, 2018 incident in which he was charged with:

  • Prowl at night
  • Mischief causing damage under $5000

He also has the following outstanding charges:

  • Theft under $5000
  • Failure to appear in court
  • Failure to comply with bail conditions

The Crown indicates that this is a reverse onus situation, which means that Coaster will have to show the courts why he should be released. Furthermore the Crown tells the court that he has concerns on the primary ground regarding Coasters release.

Coasters criminal record is littered with failures to comply with conditions, which the Crown lists as following:

2012 (convictions)

  • Failure to comply with undertaking (bail conditions)
  • Failure to comply with recognizance x2 (bail conditions)

2013 (convictions)

  • Breach of probation x3

2014 to 2016 saw numerous convictions of breaches, according to the Crown. These numerous breaches support the Crowns primary grounds concerns, which indicates that this man is unlikely to show up to court or follow his bail conditions.

Duty counsel requests a remand to tomorrow by video.

His Worship Leaman, orders Coaster remanded into custody to await his court date tomorrow. Coaster is sent back to his cell at the TBPS station to await prisoner transport to the Thunder Bay District Jail, where he will spend at least the night.
