(THUNDER BAY, ON) – A violent incident at the Thunder Bay District Jail erupted this afternoon. An official at the jail called it a “dangerous situation” when we called to inquire.
Details are thin at this point, but numerous inmates, approximately 4 or 5 attacked at least one other inmate.
Correctional officers working at the overcrowded district jail responded to the incident and managed to regain control.
The inmate who was attacked received a head injury and was transported to the emergency department of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further treatment. Thunder Bay Police Service officers are on location investigating the incident.
George Joseph, a local long time lawyer well known for being one of the best, spoke in court this week about how when he was meeting with a client at the district jail, that he witnessed inmates living in the rooms meant for lawyer-inmate meetings. He did not appear pleased with the conditions inmate are enduring.
Violent incidents erupt at a concerning rate at the district jail, often unreported due to fear of people being further victimized.
