Michael Daniel Bewcyk,Sex Offender, Arrested Again

(THUNDER BAY, ON) – On October 5th, 2019 a registered sex offender violated his court-ordered prohibition to not be anywhere that children under 16 years of age are, or might be. This includes, but is not limited to schools, daycares, playgrounds, school yards, community centres, etc.
Allegations are that 71-year-old Michael Daniel Bewcyk was attending the Indigo Book store located on Memorial Ave on October 5th. He has two charges for attending the store and likely in the presence of children under 16.
He appeared in a Thunder Bay Courthouse courtroom this morning via video link while in police custody at the Thunder Bay Police Service station. His Worship, Justice of the Peace Marcel Donio was presiding over court this morning along with Crown Attorney Rob Kozak and criminal defence lawyer Aranka Golphy performing the role of duty counsel.
His charges are:

  • Breach of court ordered prohibition (not be around kids under 16 years old) x2.

There is limited discussion surrounding whether or not Bewcyk should be released. A publication ban was requested by Bewcyk through duty counsel, so we cannot go into those details.

Bewcyk is to to remain in jail for the time being and is not being released back into the community today. He is scheduled to reappear in court on Wednesday via video link from the Thunder Bay District Jail, where he will be transported to shortly.
