(THUNDER BAY, ON) – This afternoon we broke the story of yet another violent assault happening at the District Jail. Correctional Officers along with Thunder Bay Police Service and Superior EMS responded to the scene.
The victim, a 25-year-old male inmate was found unresponsive and bleeding from the back of his head. Chest compressions and numerous life-saving measures were engaged in order to save the man’s life.
The beating, which included punches, kicks and the inmates head being slammed into the cell bars, is what our sources indicate happened.
Our most recent information is that the inmate is in a coma at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
This is at least the second violent assault at the jail this week. Numerous more assaults take place but are not reported to staff as inmates do not want to be further victimized.
The overcrowded and understaffed jail has passed the tipping point. Thunder Bay is slated to get a new jail which will have 325 beds, but, it will combine the correctional centre and the district jail. I recall this move was done with our two hospitals being combined into one before.
Perhaps a larger facility, closed to 500 beds would be better off to provide room for growth? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
