The Winnipeg Police Service nailed their first cannabis user for burning the ganja in a motor vehicle on a highway.

It was about 1:00 am, the first day of marijuana being legal and Winnipeg Police Service traffic division inspector Gord Spado said that during a traffic stop, a ticket was issued by one of his officers.

It is illegal to consume cannabis in your vehicle.

Spado commented that the cannabis was very likely purchased illegally, as online sales started about an hour before and nothing was delivered as of 1:00 am, they did not issue a ticket for that.

Spado adds that determining whether cannabis was purchased illegally or legally will be difficult. The other challenging aspect is ticketing people for enjoying edible marijuana products in vehicles.

Once edibles are commercially produced and have proper packaging that states what it is, it may become easier to determine if people are consuming in vehicles, as the product would need to be transported in the trunk.

A lot of new marijuana offences come with a $672 fine, just like this man found out.
