(DRYDEN, ON) – It’s W.A.S.H. court in Thunder Bay this morning! That means that the regions bail matters all come to Thunder Bay to be dealt with. W.A.S.H. is short for Weekend and Statutory Holiday.
This morning a 26-year-old Elsa Shakakeesic found herself in police custody at the Dryden Police Service station. She appeared by telephone into a Thunder Bay bail court.
Crown Attorney P. Pasloski was working with Justice of the Peace Jennifer Neill and a duty counsel representative to sort out the bail issues this morning.
Shakakeesic is facing the following criminal code offence:
- Assault a police officer contrary to section 270(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- Resist/obstruct a police officer contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- Failure to comply with a bail condition contrary to section 145(3) of the Criminal Code of Canada x3
The Criminal Code describes assaulting a police officer as:
Every one commits an offence who assaults a public officer or peace officer engaged in the execution of his duty or a person acting in aid of such an officer.
Resist/obstruct a police officer in the Criminal Code reads as:
Every one who resists or wilfully obstructs a public officer or peace officer in the execution of his duty or any person lawfully acting in aid of such an officer.
Breaching a bail condition is described in the Criminal Code as:
Every person who is at large on an undertaking or recognizance given to or entered into before a justice or judge and is bound to comply with a condition of that undertaking or recognizance, and every person who is bound to comply with a direction under subsection 515(12) or 522(2.1) or an order under subsection 516(2), and who fails, without lawful excuse, the proof of which lies on them, to comply with the condition, direction or order is guilty of an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years; or an offence punishable on summary conviction.
Shakakeesic was denied bail today, but was scheduled to appear Monday in a Sioux Lookout bail court.
