The dump on Spence Road, which services the Oliver-Paipoonge area had a garbage fire break out earlier today. The fire quickly spread to a pile of tires. The toxic smoke that was billowing out of the tire fire hampered fire suppression efforts.

Since then the fire has continued to spread, engulfing the area south of the dump and is currently approaching Pole Line Road.

The Oliver-Paipoonge Fire Department appears overwhelmed as they have put in a call for assistance from any surrounding fire departments that may have spare units. Multiple area fire departments have responded with help.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry have received an official request for help, although we have not been able to confirm whether or not they have managed to respond to the scene of this out of control wildfire.

UPDATE: Firefighters say they have put out most of the fire but some hot spots are still giving them trouble. The MNR is still being requested to come assist.

UPDATE: Shortly after midnight firefighters cleared the area of all hot spots.

  1. Wow now that fire is hitting close to home hopefully they will be able to keep it under control till it is put out enough of wildfires burning west we do not need them here that is for sure do not think that this is going to be a very good year for some reason. Hope that we start getting some good sunny warm summer weather that would be great for sure but they say it is not going to be very warm this year.
