(FORT FRANCES, ON) – On May 2, 2019, at approximately 2:50 p.m., members of the Rainy River District Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received two complaints of a possible impaired driver on Highway #71 in La Vallee Township. Police located the vehicle parked in the middle of Vandrunen Road with the driver asleep at the wheel.
The officer made observations of the male and determined that he had alcohol in his body. The male became combative with police, was removed from the vehicle and taken into police custody. He was transported to the detachment, where he underwent further tests.
As a result of the investigation, Thomas ROEN, 51 years of age, of Fort Frances, has been charged with the following offences contrary to the Criminal Code:
- Operation while Impaired – alcohol or drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a),
- Operation while Impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b),
- Resist peace officer, contrary to section 129(a).
The accused was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to attend court at the Fort Frances Ontario Court of Justice on May 27, 2019.
On May 3, 2019, the accused attended the detachment to report he had sustained an injury during the arrest. As a result, the OPP notified the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) who has invoked its mandate. The OPP will be unable to release further information.
