(THUNDER BAY, ONT) – With the cuts from the Greyhound bus service across Northwestern Ontario, many residents are now asking for the return of Via rail.

Comments on social media have come as an outcry from people who use the Greyhound bus service regularily.

There is a desperate need to restore Via rail. There are two Via rail lines that run through parts of northeastern and northwestern Ontario but they do not go through Thunder Bay.

Bruce Hyer, the former MP of Thunder Bay Superior North says that Canada needs a good strategy and policy with public transportation with air, rail and buses.

The closest Via rail stations are the ones in Sioux Lookout and White River. Both are roughly 4 hours from Thunder Bay.

  1. yes they should bring back the via rail train…it would certainly make travel across the country easier and safer. with the buses being cut and unsafe to and scary to use anymore I think the train makes a lot of sense to reinstate in Thunder Bay.. not every one can travel by air as it is costly and not always reliable. I say bring back the via train to our beautiful city .
    thanks.

  2. I say it should come back. Had the joys of being on it for its last rounds when we did have it. Would rather ride by train than bus anyways. But I do hope if we get it, that they do not price gouge us for the services.

  3. Yes service should be restored thru Thunder Bay. It’s a big centre and so much more convenient for travelers. I used to travel from TB to Calgary or Edmonton all the time because it was convenient, fairly quick, relaxing and within my budget. I would love to be able to take the train to TB again.

  4. Yes, service is required for Northwestern Ontario. Many people rely on public transportation to get to doctor appointments and other important business. This is a must for Seniors unable to drive because of health reasons and otherwise. I would love to see Via Rail return to this area.
