OUTBREAK ALERT: Syphilis goes wild

(NORTHWESTERN, ON) โ€“ The Northwestern Health Unit catchment area continues to see an increase in cases of syphilis which has been tied to the ongoing outbreak of syphilis in Winnipeg Manitoba.

Dr. Kit Young-Hoon explains that โ€œuntil Winnipeg rates go back down we are likely going to continue to see higher than normal ratesโ€.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) spread through direct contact with a syphilis sore during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Young-Hoon explains that โ€œSyphilis is easily cured with antibiotics when treated early. But, delayed treatment can result in severe and irreversible damage.โ€

To prevent syphilis, the health unit urges the public to use condoms which are available for free at local Northwestern Health Unit offices. Those who have had unprotected sex with a new partner should seek confidential free testing from either the Northwestern Health Unit or from their health care provider.

Those who are most at risk are:

  • people with multiple or new sexual partners โ€ข people who sell or purchase sex
  • people who have unprotected sex

  1. In most cases, those with syphilis and other STDs run in the same circles. Usually low life druggers and alcoholics who aren’t particularly hygienic. On occasion however, main stream society individuals who dabble in intravenous drugs, prostitution or picking up floozies and losers from the bars bring the disease home to family which is disgusting.

Unbelievable how much of a cess pool Thunder Bay is becoming. Tuberculosis, aids and syphilis so far. What’s next? Bubonic plague.?
