Around 9 pm this evening, Thunder Bay’s Superior North EMS entered what is known as “Code Black”.
Code Black means there are NO ambulances available for the next call, and that one will have to be dispatched from a neighbouring community such as Shuniah, etc.
Dispatching an ambulance from a neighbouring community could possibly put those neighbouring communities into Code Black, and also have an extended response time for the callers. When something like a heart attack occurs, a mere few minutes makes the difference between life and death.
This happens often, I hear about it a lot. Thunder Bay needs more ambulances. I read somewhere earlier today that emergency calls were up 25% year over year last year, yet we only added one ambulance. It’s not enough, we need more.
