Victims Identifed in Fatal Highway Collision

(THUNDER BAY, ON) – On August 19, 2019, at approximately 6:05 p.m., officers from the Thunder Bay and Nipigon Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services and Superior North Emergency Medical Service (EMS) responded to a multi vehicle collision on Highway 11/17 near Pearl Road 5, in the Municipality of Shuniah.

Preliminary investigation revealed that an east bound Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) attempted to make a left turn into a rest stop located along Highway 11/17, when it was struck from behind by a tractor trailer unit (TTU). The SUV then collided with a west bound pick-up truck.

The two occupants from the SUV were pronounced deceased at the scene. They have been identified as Joann MENDOWEGAN, 61 years of age, from Thunder Bay and Christopher TOWEGISHIG, 46 years of age, from Greenstone.

The driver of the TTU has been charged with Careless Driving contrary to section 130 of the Highway Traffic Act.

The investigation is continuing.

  1. What a bunch of BS. The two people who were natives, so the white truck driver gets ways with killing tow people. If it was the other way around, native truck driver and two white people were killed, I can guarantee that native driver would be in jail

  2. Hey STUPID!! (Billy) were you at the scene? Do you know the truck driver was white? Most drivers of CMVs are Pakistani not white so if your going to shoot your mouth off make sure you know your facts moron!!
